Last Sunday was a bit different from any other day. A huge number of longboats could be seen forming a line on the Segah riverside. There turned out to be a longboat race taking place.
The race was highly expected to be the grand attraction of the Abut Bassar Banua cultural festival. It was held on the last day of festival as the closing show.
Villagers from various districts gathered to commemorate this event by taking part in the race. The race ended with exciting cheers from the crown.
The race itself is a tradition that's been around for anyone could remember. The boats "Sequin Dragon" is usually brought down to the edge of the river by a number of people. It is about 9 meter long and majorly painted in yellow. The process of bringing down the boat is called "baturunan". Baturunan reflects the value that's been passed down from generation to generation which is togetherness.
The previous regent that was present throughout the race expressed his appreciation of this joyous moment. He also wished that the value of togetherness to always be present in the our everyday life, not just limited to a certain event.
