Indonesia, as the first country in the Asia-Pacific region, seeks to receive financial resources from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for having successfully reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the past.

The payment from the GCF is based on results achieved by Indonesia between 2014- 2016, and which have been reported and validated by experts from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This is the essence of REDD+: a mechanism to reward countries for having reduced their deforestation.

Even though this payment represents a small fraction of the volume of results reported by Indonesia during 2014-2016, it will be instrumental to further extend and enhance the country’s two flagship government programmes, Social Forestry and Forest Management Units. It will be implemented by the Government of Indonesia and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), along with national and local governing institutions, civil society representatives and local communities. Both Social Forestry and Forest Management Units are ambitious and innovative programmes that contribute strongly to the double objective of sustainable forest management and rehabilitation, as well as community empowerment and poverty alleviation.

Forest Management Units and Social Forestry are cornerstones of the Government of Indonesia’s objective to decentralize the sustainable management of forests and devolve access to and management of forests and land to communities. Both initiatives will be an opportunity to further strengthen multi-stakeholder engagement as well as for Indonesia to improve sustainable management of open access forest areas, thereby contributing to the country’s NDC.

Indonesia has achieved significant results through reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. It is estimated that the country reduced a total of 244,892,137.00 tCO2e of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation between 2013 and 2017.
